What is Encryption in Computer Software?

Every modern computer has a tool that can encrypt data to make it unreadable by unauthorized parties without the proper key. What is encryption and how does it function? This article explains the fundamentals of encryption and how it can be used to secure sensitive information from hackers.

In simple terms, data encryption transforms the information that is readable into encrypted ciphertext that can only be deciphered by authorized users who have the right password. It is an important component of cyber-security that provides the security of data as well as keeping sensitive information away from unauthorised users.

A common form of encryption employs cryptographic mathematical models to transform the original data into a confusing collection of characters that aren’t readable (known as»ciphertext»). Encryption algorithms «scramble» bits of information in a random fashion, such that even with enormous computing power, it will take a considerable amount of time to try and determine the key needed to convert back to plain text.
